Closing date for Keldwyth Award 2024

Those of you intending to apply for this year’s Keldwyth Award competition should do so soon, preferably by the end of April. However, whilst we have a good number of applications we will extend the deadline until 23.59 on Sunday 5th May.

2023 Award Winner to perform in St Anne’s Church, Ings, LA8 9PY

Sunday 14th April at 2.30pm – £10 at the door incl. tea/buns after the concert

• Paddy Davies (percussion)
• National Youth Orchestra, Keldwyth Award winner 2023, student at Royal Academy
• Programme to include: Multi-percussion, snare drum, Chinese drum
• and Bach Violin Sonata in G minor for marimba

Prepare to be amazed by Paddy’s virtuosity and musicianship!

Finals Concert News and Result

This years finals concert at Grange Victoria Hall on August 19th was once again of the highest standard. Each of the six performers gave delightful performances and gave the judges a difficult decision. The Keldwyth Award Society is very grateful to the Judges, performers, and to our accompanists, David Battersby and Tim Kennedy, for their respective contributions to the event. The winner was Paddy Davies (percussion) with the runner-up spot shared between Hannah Borlase (viola) and Sam Weakley (baritone).

Finals Concert News and Result

This years concert with seven young Cumbrian musicians was a great success. All of the performers gave skilled and delightful recitals to a good sized audience. The Keldwyth Award Society is very grateful to the Judges, performers, and to our accompanist, David Battersby, for their respective contributions to the event. The winner was Helen Southernwood (soprano) with Jacob Egglestone (guitar) the runner-up.

Please remember the early start. Due to the fewer than normal applications for the 2022 Award, we dispensed with the Preliminary Round so that there are seven 15 minute recitals this year – approximate timings below. We can promise a delightful evening’s music-making:

The Adjudication by Ian Jones (chair), Linda Walker and Marco Guidici will follow at about 21.15, who will then present the trophies and prize-money. The first prize of £1000 is generously sponsored by Lunchtime Live at Carlisle Cathedral.

Finals Concert Result

Our four finalists delighted a good audience, only too pleased to be back listening to live music, at Grange’s Victoria Hall. The judges praised all the contestants who each, very successfully, did their best to make it a difficult decision. In the end, it was Jessica Harper who won the Reg Griffiths Trophy and the £1000 cheque for 1st prize, for which we were very grateful to receive sponsorship from Lunchtime Live at Carlisle Cathedral. Bertram Nicholson was the runner-up and received the Geoffrey Blake Trophy and £500. Susie Duxbury and Sam Weakley each received £250.

Preliminary Round Result

Eleven contestants provided a delightful day’s music-making yesterday. The Judges praised all for the high-standard of the performances. One of the purposes of the day, of course, was to choose four finalists, though that, at the time, seemed secondary to the pleasure that all the day’s contestants gave to an audience deprived of live music for so long. Andrew Woodmass-Calvert (tenor) won the Best Newcomer’s Award of £100. Thomas Mawson (guitar), Matthew Warwick (trombone), Fiona Duxbury (voice), Alistair Burton (piano), Tania Pencu (piano), Charlotte Thomson (voice) each received £50. This year’s finalists are: (L to R): Bertram Nicholson (viola) from Lanercost, Susie Duxbury (soprano) from Arkholme, Jessica Harper (soprano) from High Hesket, Sam Weakley (bass) from High Brigham. We will look forward to hearing them all again on 27th August.

Preliminary Round – change of venue – now at St Anne’s Church, Ings, LA8 9PY

We’ve had to switch the Prelims away from Kendal Town Hall. The new Kendal Midday Concert Club piano won’t now arrive in time for our needs – an unfortunate knock on from the Covid delayed renovation there. The timetable for the day’s recitals remains exactly the same.

Ings Church will nevertheless be a good venue and we have the Parish Hall for competitors to rehearse. There is some on street parking by the Church but you can also park in the Cafe Ambio / BP Filling Station car park which is only a short walk to the Church. Lunches/coffee etc are available at Cafe Ambio and also at the Watermill Inn which is only 100 yards from the Church.

2021 applications now open – new website launched

Applications for both Award and Grants for 2021 are now open. You can apply at any time till the closing date. Please see the details on the relevant page of the website.

New website: Keldwyth Award Society’s old website (keldwythaward.org.uk) has now been replaced by this new one (keldwyth.org.uk). The new site better reflects the two ways in which the Society supports Cumbrian Young Musicians:

• The annual Keldwyth Award competition for talented performers
• Keldwyth Grants to enable children/young people in financial need to participate in musical activities.
