Preliminary Round Competition 2018 – the verdict

This is a musical scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding, young musician either born or educated in Cumbria. The Award is competed for annually at two public concerts, in a Preliminary Round Concert, at which four competitors are chosen to take part in a Finals Concert.

The Reg Griffiths Trophy

The winner receives a cheque for £1000 and the Reg Griffiths Trophy.

The runner-up receives a cheque for £500 and the Geoffrey Blake Trophy.

The other two finalists each receive £250. 2018 saw the introduction of a Best Newcomer’s prize of £100 to the best performance by a competitor new to the Award and not selected for the Final. All other competitors receive £50 each toward their expenses.

Eligibility and Award Concerts


You should have been born/educated in Cumbria and be aged 16-22 on the 1st July in the year of the competition. You must have passed Grade 8 or be currently studying at grade 8 standard. You should apply by the end of April in the year of competition.

In 2024, competitors should be able to attend/perform at the Preliminary Round Concert on Monday 8th July from 10am at St Anne’s Church, Ings, LA89PY. (Tickets are available on the door. Advance booking is not required) and if selected at the Finals Concert on Saturday 17th August at 7.30 pm, also at Ings Church. Tickets for the Finals Concert can be bought in advance.
