Cumbrian Young Musicians Award & Grants

Donate / Subscribe / Attend our events

The education of young musicians is very expensive, and costs often have to be born by parents, especially with the increasing marginalisation of music in schools. Financial assistance from Donors, Subscribers and Concert-goers is vital for the future of our Cumbrian young musicians.

Keldwyth Grants has been made possible thanks to a generous donation by the Westmorland Music Trust.  This fund can only be maintained by donations and by the generosity of subscribers.

Funding the Keldwyth Award comes from ticket sales to our two annual events, the Preliminary Round Competition and the Finals Concert. Please attend to support Cumbrian Young Musicians. Please donate or become a Subscriber to the Keldwyth Award Society to support our Cumbrian Young Musicians.

Testimonials

When prospective competitors apply for our Award, they tell us how they might use the prize-money, if successful. Here are some of their comments. They all refer to the cost of expert musical tuition, instruments, courses, and travel:

  • I am the only clarinettist this year to get a place at the Royal College of Music, London, but due to high competition in the wind department I didn’t get a scholarship’
  • ‘Competition for creative courses is tighter than ever’
  • I am currently indebted to my parents for purchasing me instruments that I could never have afforded on my own’
  • ‘The Keldwyth Award will help to pay for my tuition fee at Junior Royal Northern College of Music which is around £3800 per annum and help cover the cost of transport from Barrow to Manchester every Saturday.’
  • ‘My parents are low income and have done all they can over the years to support my development and the cost of tuition. They are unable to meet the extra costs of college education.’
  • ‘The living costs in Manchester will be high. I want to go to Royal Northern College of  Music as I think it’s the best thing for my studies.’

This illustrates some of the ways in which the Award can help our young Cumbrian musicians. We hope you will feel able to support them by becoming a Subscriber.
